The University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein is part of the Christian Aibrechts University of Kiel and the University of Lübeck. UKSH is the second largest university hospital in Germany and one of the largest hospitals in Europe with more than 80 clinics and institutes at the Kiel and Lübeck sites, over 12,000 employees, around 2,300 inpatient beds, approx. 240,000 outpatients and more than 100,000 inpatients, as well as over 3,000 births per year. It combines research and teaching with patient care and is the only maximum care hospital in Schleswig-Holstein.

Technical details

UKSH’s operating sites are comprised of the Kiel Campus, which covers approximately 22 hectares, and the Lübeck Campus, which covers approximately 70 hectares. Both properties are owned by the State of Schleswig-Holstein. UKSH intends to carry out a comprehensive structural redevelopment of both sites in order to clear their investment backlog and realize their future viability. At each of the sites, the investments planned for the period until around 2024 include both the construction of large new complexes and the conversion / refurbishment or renovation of a significant proportion of the existing buildings, as well as outdoor facilities and demolition. The construction measures will be carried out in sections and, after completion, handed over for use in sections or, in the case of refurbishment, handed back.
